Welcome to our latest AVAround the World blog post, where we take a look at the many accomplishments of AVAlumni spanning across the globe. From recitals to role debuts, concerts to festivals, February 2016 is certainly proving to be a busy month for our talented AVAlumni. Check out our update below of what successes our alumni have achieved this month.
Baritone Michael Adams ('15) performs with Grand Théâtre de Genève as Melisso in their production of Alinca on February 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 2016.
Tenor Michele Angelini ('06) is set to perform the role of Conte Almaviva in the production of Il barbiere di Siviglia with Teatro de la Maestranza from February 8 - 16, 2016. Recently Michele appeared in Opera News as one of the rising stars of opera. Read the article here.
Christopher Bolduc ('10) will sing the role of Sharpless in the Hessisches Staatstheater production of Madama Butterfly which opens February 19 & 27; March 2, 6, 12, 19, 24 & 27; April 2, 2016. Albert Horne conducts while John Dew directs the opera.
Christian Bowers, baritone ('13), performs with Shreveport Opera located in Texas in their performance of H.M.S. Pinafore on February 20, 2016. Christian will sing the role of Captain Corcoran.
Soprano Colleen Daly ('09) has a busy month ahead of her. Colleen will be singing the role of Micaela in Carmen with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra & HUB Opera Ensemble on February 13 & 14. Later in the month, Colleen sings the role of Fidelia with Baltimore Concert Opera in their performance of Edgar on February 26 & 28, 2016.
Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato ('95) will perform at a Gala Concert in Helsinki on February 14 at the FINLANDIA-TALO Music Hall. Later in the month, Joyce will perform the leading role of Romeo in I Capuletti e I Montecchi wtih Deutsche Oper Berlin on February 29 - March 3, 2016. The production will be featured concert-style.
Soprano Joyce El-Khoury ('08) will perform the title role in Seattle Opera's production of Maria Stuarda which will open on February 28; March 11, 2016. Othalie Graham ('04) will portray the role of Serena in Porgy and Bess with both Toledo Opera on February 12 & 14, 2016 and also with Springfield Symphony Orchestra, MA on February 27, 2016.
Tenor Bryan Hymel ('08) is set to travel to Prague on February 14 to perform several solo recitals with PKF - Prague Philharmonica in Smetana Hall and in Théâtre des Champs-Élysées Paris on February 17. Bryan will perform a recital with mezzo-soprano Irene Roberts on February 25 in Wigmore Hall in London. This performance will feature songs and arias by Vaughan Williams, Wagner, Gounod, Mascagni, Berlioz and Bizet. For a full list of the program click here.
Bass-baritone Kristopher Irmiter ('86) will perform the roles of Angelotti and Sciarrone in San Diego Opera's production of Tosca on February 13 - 21, 2016. For more information on San Diego Opera's production, click here for interactive videos.
Soprano Michelle Johnson ('12) premiered the title role in Aida with Sarasota Opera on January 30, 2016. The performance continues through February and into March 19, 2016.
Baritone Steven LaBrie ('12) will premier the role of Ginastera in the production of Estancia with New York City Ballet on February 2, 6, 9, 10 & 11, 2016. The performance tells the story of a city boy who learns to wrangle horses and ultimately the heart of a country girl on the Argentine pampas.
Soprano Zulimar López-Hernández ('09) will perform the soprano solo in Carmina Burana for Eugene Ballet in Oregon on February 13 & 14, 2016. The performance will include the Eugene Concert Choir with Eugene Ballet Company's dancers.
Soprano Angela Meade ('09) also performs this month as Leonora in The Metropolitan Opera's production of Verdi's Il trovatore on February 3, 6, 9 & 13, 2016. Later in the month, Angela performs with the Cincinnati Symphony in Rachmanninoff's "The Bells" on February 25 & 27, 2016.
Baritone Zachary Nelson performs Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus with the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Opera Project in Tokyo, Japan. This performance is part of an education project aimed at nurturing young musicians through opera.
Tenor Richard Troxell ('92) will perform as a soloist with the Peabody Concert Orchestra on February 2, 2016. Richard will perform with mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves in a performance that will include Gershwin and Bizet selections.
Baritone Todd Thomas ('87) will perform with Sarasota Opera in a production of The Battle of Legnano as Rolando. The performance opens on February 27 - March 18, 2016. This last installment of the Verdi cycle features two warriors who find their friendship tested for love of the same woman.
Baritone Musa Ngqungwana ('14) is set to appear with the Washington National Opera on February 12 - 20, 2016 in a performance of Lost in the Stars. Eric Owens stars with Musa in this gripping musical tragedy based on Alan Paton's classic 1948 novel Cry, the Beloved Country.
Soprano Ailyn Pérez ('06) performed with Houston Grand Opera on January 22 and continues the run through February 7 as Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro. This performance marks a return for Ailyn. Read her dazzling reviews here.
Soprano Melinda Whittingon ('15) will perform with Arizona Opera in two location this month: Phoenix and Tuscan, AZ. Melinda will sing the role of Donna Anna in Arizona Opera's production of Don Giovanni.
Mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williams ('14) will perform the role of Hansel in the production of Hänsel and Gretel with Knoxville Opera on February 26 & 28, 2016. Humperdinck's larger-than-life version of the classic tale features Chrystal along with a children's chorus.
Soprano Corinne Winters ('11) is set to perform with Opera Vlaanderen on February 12 - March 15, 2016 in the role of Desdemona in their production of Otello. Corinne has performed with Opera Vlaanderen in the past in their production of Don Giovanni as Donna Anna.
Samantha van Adelsberg is a Los Angeles native working in AVA's marketing department and managing the AVA Young Professionals group. Samantha holds two degrees from Binghamton University in English and Vocal Performance and is an active rock vocalist in the Philadelphia music scene.
