Tenor Bryan Hymel is having a great year on the stage, and it has just gotten better! Last week he received a telephone call from ‘the’ La Scala in Milan asking him to come quickly to sing Don Jose in their upcoming production of Carmen. Putting two and two together they must have heard about his major success in the same role at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, or maybe they happened to be in Toronto when he debuted Don Jose with the Canadian Opera Company?
Bryan has been very busy this last year with his most recent success last week as Rudolfo in La bohème with Atlanta Opera. He had good company on the stage with AVA resident artist Jan Cornelius as his Musetta.
Looking ahead to the future, Bryan will sing the title role in Faust with Opera Birmingham, after which he will sing in Nabucco with the Bayerische Staatsoper. In the spring he will return to Royal Opera House, Covent Garden to cover the title role in Werther, and he will conclude his season with a reprisal of Faust with Santa Fe Opera also with AVA alumna Ailyn Pèrez.
Bryan is the ‘cover’ boy for the month of June in the new AVA calendar…which you can still purchase for a suggested donation of $10.
