One of our favorite AVA events happened twice last week – the Giargiari Bel Competition.
Tuesday October 5th at the Perelman Theater and Sunday October 9thon WRTI 90.1 FM.
This was a big sing with 22 resident artists performing their best aria to a full house with all the new resident artists taking part in the competition. The esteemed judges were Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center, Inc., Allan Glassman, AVA alum and internationally known tenor, and Gayletha Nichols, Executive Director of the National Council Auditions for the Metropolitan Opera.
Arias were sung from L’Africaine to Pique Dame, and everything in between! The judges chose soprano Corinne Winters for first place and tenor Zach Borichevsky for second place. Ms. Winters received the first Parkinson Prize given by the James Parkinson Opera Foundation. Alice and Walter Strine were the sponsors of the event and were thrilled with the concert.
As I said, this happened twice last week and the second time was when WRTI 90.1 FM played the concert on the air on Sunday. There was a whole new set of judges listening in at home and choosing their favorite. The first place winner was tenor Zach Borichevsky, second place went to soprano Michelle Johnson, and a tie for third place by tenors Noah Van Niel and John Viscardi.
If you like to hear the winning arias by Ms. Winters and Mr. Borichevsky? Go to the AVA web site front page and hear È strano!...Ah! fors’ è lui…Sempre libera from La traviata, and La fleur que tu m’avais jetée from Carmen.
