I get my share of phone calls in a day, but my first call yesterday was the best -it was soprano Indra Thomas calling from Austria (glad I didn’t have to pay for it!)
She was calling to tell me officially some news that I found out a few weeks ago. She will be singing a series of Verdi’s Requiem this fall in Spain. That in itself is great, but when you hear that the soprano, mezzo-soprano, and tenor are all AVA alums, it’s just the thing to get you to jump on a plane to Spain!
Ms. Thomas is in great company with Nancy Fabiola Herrera (whom I previously wrote about), and Stuart Neill, who is having a smashing year since his run at La Scala. Indra and I joked, “what if the bass was an AVA alum too?” That would be explosive. The Requiem tour will take them to San Sebastian, Vittoria, Pamplona and Bilbao in Spain from October 23-29. At the moment, Indra is starring as Aida at the Bregenz Festival in Austria on the largest floating stage on a lake. She says that this is an interesting show, and not “your grandmother’s Aida”. The photos are quite amazing, with a copy of the Stature of Liberty and her torch on the stage (I said it was interesting).
Indra’s schedule is quite full and you have a chance to catch her on both sides of the Atlantic in the nest few months. On September11 she will be singing Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. Next stop is her hometown of Atlanta for a recital on September 26. This holiday season she will be back in NYC for a December 13 Christmas concert with The Little Orchestra Society.
