I know I said that the competition season was over, well I lied. The last of the US vocal competitions happed a few weeks past in Los Angeles. The José Iturbi Competition is for pianists and vocalists, and AVA had three singers in the competition – sopranos Takesha Meshé Kizart, Jessica Julin and baritone Christopher Bolduc.
Chris Bolduc made made it to the final round, but the winner was Karen Slack, an alumna from Curtis (Brava).
Off the topic…congratulations to Jessica for becoming a Aunt! Her family is in California so I’m sure she got to spend mucho time with newborn Jacob. She also wrote to say that her brother and family are moving to the suburbs of Philly, so I would say her nephew has a built-in babysitter.
On the other side of the globe, soprano Angela Meade and mezzo-soprano Elspeth Kincaid took part in the Operalia Competition in Paris France. Angela and Elspeth were two of the forty singers from around the world who were invited to sing in the competition.
Angela wrote to me last week and was still feeling jet lag, but made it into the semi-finals. Great photo of her in Paris. Angela is off to Vienna at the end of the competition to be a part of the International Belvedere Vocal Competition, and will meet baritone Christopher Bolduc there, who is also in the competition.
Angela has my map and tour books of Vienna, which were used in previous years by Takesha and Ailyn Perez when they were doing the competition. I pointed out the music store and the best ice cream in Vienna – what more does she need!
