By now the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions are history, but AVA with the help of two fabulous singers get to bask in the glory of being winners.
Both Angela Meade and Michael Fabiano were 2 of the 6 winners Sunday afternoon. The will both receive a $15,000 prize, which I’m sure will help with their career advancement.
There have been two excellent articles written by Anne Midgette for the New York Times. I have linked them here, beginning with the one that was published before the competition finals and the one that was printed after. It is a great day for Angela and Michael and for AVA! Both study with super-teacher Bill Schuman and they now become part of the pantheon of AVA singers who have attained this wonderful prize.
For those of you who are interested, the final competition was accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra on the main stage. Ms. Meade sang “Ach, ich liebte” from Die Entführung aus dem Serail and, “Casta Diva” (her theme song) from Norma. Mr. Fabiano sang “Torna ai felici di” from Le villi and, “Kuda, kuda” from Eugene Onegin.
Michael returned yesterday to AVA, for the first day of staging with director Dorothy Danner for AVA’s upcoming Manon production. Ms. Meade took an extra day in NYC and will be back today for a round of hugs.
Fabiano is going to have a MASSIVE career. Supremely confident, very musical and way WAY ahead of the curve for 22. It's a Carreras-like sound, large lyric verging on Spinto. Big things expected, I enjoyed his performance very much.
