Part of AVA history for so many of us alums included retired librarian Shirley Ann Weekly who passed away last week. Her time at AVA spanned more than fifteen years and she was right there with the growth of AVA.
Shirley began her career as a french horn player with the Dallas Symphony before moving to Philadelphia. Working first at Curtis, she moved to AVA with Maestro Macatsoris and Dino Yannopoulos, making her home in the front office of AVA.
Those were the ‘tight’ years at AVA when almost all of the administrative staff, including box office, worked in the front two rooms of 1920 Spruce Street. The library was very compact, but Shirley was in control of all the scores and rented orchestra parts.
During her time at AVA she was also the librarian for Music from Marlboro, and leaves many friends in that group as well.
AVA’ers tend to rally together in good and bad times, and since Shirley had no local family, we at AVA and the kind people at Marlboro were there for her. At her funeral, Rebecca Carr, Edward Albert and Michael Eberhard, three alums of AVA, sang as a memorial to the musical lady we remember.
thanks for the information i will apply that.
