In my blog, I frequently mention the singers web sites and try to always link to them for your pleasure. That got me thinking that you might think those site are just a bit of frivolity or vanity for the singers, which is so far from the truth.
The sites are there for many reasons; the first is so we, meaning the audience that love them, can follow their calendar of performances, new CD or video releases, and to read their great reviews to see what we have missed. Secondly, and I seem to fall into that category as a blogger, is to use their sites for research. It’s much easier for me to Google their name, find their site, and use the information in the bio or upcoming performances, than it is to email and wait for a response.
The biggest reason, in my opinion for these sites is for career development. Most of the singers have representation (an agent). Normally when opera companies are interested in a specific performer for a future role, they would have to contact their managers for basic information, and maybe a small video clip. Now the companies can search the singer’s site for photos, past reviews, repertoire, and even sound clips.
Youtube.com is also a great site to find clips of singers. Burak Bigili has send me youtube clips and Markus Beam told me yesterday that he would put one on of his upcoming I pagliacci in Berlin for you.
The web – it’s a good thing!
